The origins of the famous aperitifSpritz is a very popular aperitif in the nort-east of Italy, a land where it has been rooted for over a hundred years in cities such as Venice, Padova, Trieste and Treviso. The spritz was born during the period of Hapsburg domination and its name comes from the German verb “spritzen”, which means “to spray”. The Austrian soldiers considered the numerous Veneto wines to be too alcoholic compared to the alcohol content they were used to, so they ordered glasses of wine mixed with water to lengthen it. Indeed wine with water is the “smooth” spritz as it is still used today in Trieste, Udine and Gorizia.
Over the years the spritz has grown with infinite variety of possible additions, such as soda and red bitter liqueurs (such as ArtSpritz), completed with a slice of orange or lemon peel dipped or simply squeezed into the glass.
